OAD to Present Awards to Scheck, Shechtman
The Office of the Appellate Defender will hold its 20th Anniversary First Monday in October fundraising event on Oct. 7 at the New York University School of Law's Vanderbilt Hall at 40 Washington Square South. Matrimonial attorney Myrna Felder and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett partner Roy Reardon will cochair the event.
The Gould Award for legal advocates will be presented to Barry Scheck, codirector of the Innocence Project and partner at Neufeld, Scheck & Brustin, and Paul Shechtman, a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder.
Scheck and Shechtman will take opposite sides in a mock oral argument of People v. Adrian Thomas, a case before the Court of Appeals involving false confessions and police deception in interrogations (NYLJ, Oct. 24, 2012).
Former Court of Appeals Judge Carmen Ciparick will preside over the court. The rest of the bench will be filled by Zachary Carter, of Dorsey & Whitney; Evan Chesler of Cravath, Swaine & Moore; Evan Davis of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton; Meir Feder of Jones Day; Samuel Seymour of Sullivan & Cromwell; Theodore Shaw of Fulbright & Jaworski; Kathleen Sullivan, of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan; and Maria Vullo of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception in Vanderbilt Hall's Greenberg Lounge. The argument will be held at 7:30 in the Tishman Auditorium.
