Brown Rudnick has rescinded offers to 10 associates scheduled to join the firm this fall. The firm had planned to hire 23 new associates, many of them in its New York and Boston offices.

    If this story is accurate, and if the firm extended written offers and did not explicitly reserve the right to rescind the offers, and if the recipients of the offers communicated their acceptance to the firm, then, in my opinion, there should be an adverse consequence to the firm besides the shame of their having done this. Economic hardship to the firm and its partners is not to my mind an honorable excuse for casting these undoubtedly mostly young people adrift at this late date in the hiring season
