Eastern District Accepts E-Filing for Civil Suits

As of Feb. 3, attorneys can e-file new civil lawsuits in the Eastern District of New York.

Attorneys can file new suits electronically as long as they pay any filing fee online with a credit card, and as long as the filing does not include a motion for a temporary restraining order or an order to show cause.

The Eastern District joins the Northern and Western Districts in allowing electronic filing of most new civil lawsuits. In the Northern District, e-filing of most new suits is mandatory, while in the Western District it is optional.

The Southern District still requires initiating documents to be filed in hard copy, though as in all federal courts, subsequent filings must be electronic.

Documents and information related to e-filing in the Eastern District can be found at the court's web site at https://www.nyed.uscourts.gov/cmecf-documentation.
