If Ryan‘s rule had been "wear a suit" it would have clearly even-handed, but it would have afforded women fewer options. (This is an occasion where men are far more hemmed in, pardon the pun, than women.) I hate taking his side on anything, and I don‘t care about sleeves, but try to draft an objective rule about appropriate work attire for women, and you will wind up with a list of exclusions rather than inclusions. It makes you sound like you‘re getting the vapors when you really just want to say "dress professionally." Also, given that the audience for this is grown women rather than 14-year-olds, can Vivia Chen drop the irritating use of "gals" and "girls"?
