Justice Roman
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Feb. 28 unanimously voted to approve Justice Nelson Roman of the Appellate Division, First Department, for an opening on the Southern District bench. If approved by the Senate, Roman would assume the seat vacated when Richard Berman took senior status on Sept. 11, 2011. A former police officer and prosecutor who graduated from Brooklyn Law, Roman became a Civil Court judge in 1998 and a Supreme Court justice in the Bronx in 2003. He was named to the Appellate Division in 2009.
In addition to Berman's seat, there are five other openings in the Southern District and the White House has advanced nominations for three of them.
