Two top officials in the state Attorney General's Office have new roles. In an email to staff last week, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that Harlan Levy, his top lieutenant, has assumed new duties as chief deputy and counsel. Also, Janet Sabel, executive deputy attorney general for social justice, has been promoted to first deputy of affirmative litigation. Levy and Sabel will receive their current salaries, $164,200 and $164,000, respectively, in their new posts.
Levy, who had been first deputy attorney general, was promoted to chief deputy and also named counsel, succeeding Terryl Brown in the latter post. Brown last year joined Harris Beach as a partner in the government compliance and investigations practice group. Levy, 57, a former Boies, Schiller & Flexner litigation partner and Manhattan homicide prosecutor, has known Schneiderman since they were classmates at Amherst College in the mid-1970s. He went on to obtain a law degree from Columbia Law School.
Sabel, 57, had been a career Legal Aid Society lawyer when Schneiderman brought her into his shop and put her in charge of six bureaus: civil rights, environmental protection, labor, health care, tobacco compliance and charities. She will continue overseeing those bureaus until a replacement is named, Schneiderman said in the email. Sabel has a law degree from New York University School of Law.
