• Brooklyn Law School professor Susan Herman, president of the American Civil Liberties Union, was recently awarded the 2012 IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize for her book "Taking Liberties: The War on Terror and the Erosion of American Democracy." The $10,000 annual award honors a work of scholarship that explores the tension between civil liberties and national security in contemporary U.S. society.

• Pace Law School took top honors last month at the Tulane University Law School National Baseball Arbitration Competition, beating teams from 40 law schools around the United States. Pace Law students Greg Dreyfuss, Dan Masi and Jared Hand participated in the two-day moot competition, which allows participants to sharpen oral and written advocacy skills within the specialized context of Major League Baseball's salary arbitration proceedings.

• Patricia Williams, a professor at Columbia Law School, has been selected as keynote speaker for Albany Law School's 19th annual Kate Stoneman Day, to be held April 10. Kate Stoneman was the first woman admitted to practice law in New York state and in 1898 was Albany Law's first female graduate. Williams is the author of "The Alchemy of Race and Rights: Diary of a Law Professor" and has been published widely in the areas of race and gender. As keynote speaker, she will also receive the school's Miriam M. Netter '72 Award, named in honor of the late alumna who led the campaign to endow the school's Kate Stoneman Chair in Law & Democracy.

• Albany Law School students Justin Rutherford and Yaasha Sabbaghian placed second of 24 teams in the regional round of the American Bar Association's Negotiation Competition, held Jan. 19 and 20 at Quinnipiac University School of Law. They will advance to the national competition in Dallas this month.

• A Syracuse University School of Law student team finished in the final four of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition Midwest Regional Rounds, held Feb. 2-3. Students were awarded for their written submissions in the Best Memorial category, with third-year student Shane Simon winning in the Best Oralist category. Other team members were Benjamin Frazzini Kendrick, Natalie Mitchell, Kevin MacLeod and Tess Frame.
