Tomorrow we will kick off the new year with our CLE program on corporate employee benefit trends and the impact of Obamacare aka the Patient Protection and Affordable Care (PPACA) on companies. We added to the program a session on retirement planning for corporate counsel and attorneys. The Ayco Company will be providing the first 100 attendees with a copy of a 326 page book, "Investing in Your Future, a Step-by-Step Guide to Financial Planning for Every Stage of Life."

Aiding the Legal Community

2013 will be our eighth year of the Kenneth G. Standard Diversity Internship program. The section has placed over 50 law students in corporate America or not-for-profits each summer. For 2013, we already have commitments from The ACE Group, FINRA, NYSTEC and Pitney Bowes for interns. We would anticipate long term supporters Alliance Bernstein and Consolidation Edison Company of New York to join us again. Also, for the second year the New York State Bar Foundation will be selecting one student this month at a not-for-profit for the Corporate Counsel Section NYS Bar Foundation Fellow.

From the Diversity Internship program, we established last year a mentoring program. The program mentors the new interns and provides mentors to our past interns. If you are interested in being a mentor please contact us.

"Inside," the Corporate Counsel Section's news letter, continues to provide thoughtful insight into topics for general counsel.

We will further advocate for the New York State Bar Association's proposal to amend §522.8 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors of Law to allow pro bono services by attorneys registered in New York as in-house counsel. The proposal originated out of our section. The need for volunteers has only grown as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

I encourage our members to visit our section's website. Our technology committee works diligently to update it and place interesting materials on it.

Tomorrow I will turn over the leadership to Howard Shafer and thank the executive committee for its service to our members this past year

David S. Rothenberg, Chair of the Corporate Counsel Section, is a vice-president with the Goldman Sachs Family Office.
