Touro Law Center was awarded a $207,477 state grant to help finance a clinic that helps homeowners facing foreclosure and bankruptcy. It was the only law school to receive grant money from a homeowner protection program operated by the state Attorney General's Office. The program has awarded $20 million to 59 housing counseling groups and 35 legal services organizations.
Touro has hired an additional staff attorney, Melissa Greenberger, an alumna working with students to increase the clinic's caseload each semester. The clinic has represented more than 300 clients since its creation in 2010. The school shares the grant with the Central Islip Civic Council, which maintains the Long Island Foreclosure Prevention Task Force and provides default counseling services.
Greenberger has worked in Touro Law's Civil Rights Litigation Clinic and Senior Citizens Law Program over the past two years. She is a small claims arbitrator in Suffolk County District Court and teaches a law and ethics course at a local community college. She was previously a criminal defense and personal injury attorney.
