Civil Court Judge Rita Mella (See Profile) won the Democratic nomination for Manhattan Surrogate. She will run unopposed in November to succeed Kristen Booth Glen, who has reached mandatory retirement age of 70, as one of the borough's two surrogates.
With 93 percent of the precincts reporting after the Sept. 13 primary, Associated Press said this morning that Mella had received 60 percent of the Democratic vote, compared to 40 percent for Acting Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jaffe (See Profile).
Turnout was light, with only 43,418 voters going to the polls in those districts. As of April 2012, there were 704,907 enrolled Democrats in Manhattan.
In Democratic primaries for Civil Court, Eddie McShan, with 60 percent of the vote, apparently has beaten Juana Valentin in the Bronx's Second District to succeed Judge Raul Cruz, who is retiring.
Richard Montelione, 53 percent, was leading Lara Genovesi in Brooklyn's First District to succeed Judge Sarah Krauss; Steven Mostofsky, 45 percent, was ahead of Theresa Ciccotto and Charles Finkelstein in Brooklyn's Fifth District for a seat held by Judge Rachel Adams; and Lisa Sokoloff, at 55 percent was leading Olga Statz in Manhattan's Third District for a seat held by Judge Diane Lebedeff. AP said that in those districts 93 to 100 percent of the polls had reported their Civil Court vote tallies.
Meanwhile, in Albany County, David Soares won the Democratic nomination for a third term as district attorney in a hard-fought primary over Lee Kindlon. Soares will have no opposition in November.
