Another Court Questions Sex Offense Risk Assessment

On the heels of a downstate trial court decision finding that a risk assessment tool wrongly subjected a sex offender to a high-risk classification, an upstate appellate court has held in an unrelated case that the tool resulted in a risk designation that was too low.

Expressing grave concerns over a standard sex offender risk assessment tool and the efficacy of residency restrictions, Acting Supreme Court Justice Daniel Conviser has reduced the risk level of a lawbreaker with a criminal record dating back to the mid 1950s.
